Nadine Meertens
Doctoral researcher in Philosophy of Mind
I am a PhD student in Neurophilosophy at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, affiliated with the Chair of Philosophy of Mind, and the Graduate School in Systemic Neuroscience. I am a member of the Cognition, Values, and Behaviour group (CVBE) and the Munich Interactive Intelligence Initiative.
My research focus lies in the philosophy of animal minds and artificial intelligence. Specifically, I focus on comparative cognition, and the intersections between philosophy of biology and robotics when it comes to minds and cognitive science.

For my doctoral project, part of the EU-funded EMERGE project, I investigate emergent awareness in minimal collectives. I aim to develop a conceptual framework for collaborative awareness, introducing a novel concept of awareness and creating tools to assess it in both artificial and biological systems. My work will extend this framework to apply beyond individual agents, exploring awareness in collective systems.
